Venture Matching at Cicada GrowLab

At Growlab, we are making it our mission to help create strong founding teams to build amazing agrifood startups. Venture Matching is a pilot program aimed specifically at matching visionaries with a great technology to bring to the world with ambitious business builders with commercial and operational skills, who are looking to work on a meaningful, impactful new venture.

Here’s how our Venture Matching program makes this happen:

  • Step 1: We are scouting for breakthrough agrifood technologies (and technologists) from across Australia

  • Step 2: We are simultaneously looking for entrepreneurs with the right commercial skills to suit an agrifood startup

  • Step 3: We will be hosting an event to bring the two groups together - this is where the matching process will happen.

  • Step 4: We will continue to work with you to test out your new team, and begin building your company.

Step 1. Finding the best agrifood breakthroughs

For technologists (honours, PhD or academic) with great ideas but who don’t know the first thing about becoming a startup, we will be coming to centres of research excellence in agriculture and food and providing free half-day workshops to see if this could be the right path for you.

In just a few hours, you’ll learn the basics of Lean Startup Methodology, meet like-minded people and fine-tune your idea. You’ll come away with a clear set of next steps to take if a startup is right for you and your technology.

Step 2. Sourcing entrepreneurs with the right commercial skills

We’re looking for curious, passionate and experienced commercial people looking to make their mark on the world. If you’re wondering why agrifood is so exciting check this out.

If you are...

  • ...a serial tech entrepreneur looking for a truly ‘meaty’ problem to solve? OR

  • ...someone who’s spent the last plenty of time in an executive role in a corporation and have always harboured a desire to launch your own venture OR

  • ...just finishing an MBA from a top university and want to forge your own destiny

…we are looking for you! Click here to express your interest and one of GrowLab’s Venture Matching team will be in touch to learn more about your interests and goals.

We’re looking for curious, passionate and experienced commercial people looking to make their mark on the world. If you’re wondering why agrifood is so exciting check this out.

  • Are a serial tech entrepreneur looking for a truly ‘meaty’ problem to solve?

  • Or maybe you’ve spent the last decade or more in an executive role in a corporation and have always harboured a desire to launch your own venture?

  • Are you just finishing an MBA from a top uni and want to forge your own destiny?

We are looking for you!

Step 3. Bringing technical and commercial people together

So we’ve found our brilliant technologists and switched on business builders. How do we get them in one room and talking to one another?

First: we are supporting a national network of meetup groups along particular verticals to get the both commercial and technical people in one room and the right kind of conversations kicking off.

  • We are setting up a Synthetic Biology Meetup network across Australia (Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide). If you’d like to to partner with us to make this a reality, drop us a line!

Second: All the way through this process, we will be vetting technologists, their startup ideas and the commercial people to ensure we get only the best of the best founders creating the best startups. Once we are 100% sure the essence of the Venture Matching program will take place by bringing these groups together in two ways:

  • “Speed networking” style events where hand-picked commercial and techies come together.

One-to-one matchmaking where we think it’s appropriate to make individual introductions.

Step 4. Taking your first steps as a new team

Once you have the basis of startup founding team, you will realise your journey has just begun. The life of a startup is rewarding but difficult and is a huge commitment. We want to take those first steps with you to guide your team to decide if you all have the confidence to leap in full time or decide it’s not the right thing for you just yet. The first manifestation of this will be a weekend bootcamp which will help you and other teams think through the realities of being a startup, set your priorities and - if you’re still in - set you on track to build your company.

Have we got your interest? Are you keen to get involved? Great! Click here to let us know a little about you and one of the GrowLab team will be in touch to learn more about you and match you up with the best and brightest in Aussie agrifood.
